Voices

Carrie has a bath to destress from her busy life. Under the water, she hears voices. After investigating the noises and finding nothing she goes back into the tub. After falling asleep something pulls her under the water. She struggles to get out from under the water as a force is holding her down. Finally, Carrie is able to get out of the water. She sees a girl rocking in the corner. The girl opens her mouth and instead of screaming an alarm noise comes out. Carrie opens her eyes and she is back under the water. After pulling the drain, as the tub empties the voices are heard going down with the water.

Following the Voices...

The production of Voices was a wonderful experience. This was my first experience writing and directing a short film. From the beginning stages until the final product the story changed immensely. The idea came from a random thought I had one day while I was laying under the water in the bathtub. I could hear the water slightly draining and it sounded like somebody was talking to me from under the water. I had this thought a long time ago, it wasn’t until in one of the scriptwriting classes that the idea came back to me. The sentence I wrote that day was “bathtub into a different world, goes underwater and either is transported to another place or hears voices”. The first title for the film was ‘Bathtub’. After the first draft of the script, I realized I needed more of a theme to my film. I thought about what would make her transport into another world? Then it hit me, she was stressed out by school work and the voices were herself warning her she needed to slow down and take a break. Once in production, the filming took two days. We filmed in Markom, ON in a friends house. The only problem I had during filming was how to get the shots I wanted in the bathtub. This required a shoulder mount and extra hands holding the camera. I could then get into the bathtub and be right over top of my actor. Once in post, I had a great time editing as I love to edit. The footage looked great but my original rough cut ended up being 7 minutes long but the maximum time had to be 4 minutes. After spending hours cutting and re-watching, the final version of Voices was made.
